The Foundations of the Catholic Faith 3 – The Catechism and Holy Scripture by Fr Guy de Gaynesford

Foundations of the Catholic Faith artwork for podcastCCC 11: ‘This Catechism aims at presenting an organic synthesis of the essential and fundamental contents of Catholic doctrine, as regards both faith and morals in the light of the 2nd Vatican Council and the whole of the Church’s Tradition. Its principal sources are the Sacred Scriptures, the Fathers of the Church, the liturgy and the Church’s Magisterium.’ The Scriptures are listed first in order of importance. Fr Guy further examines this often overlooked principle of Catholic teaching and shows how the Holy Scriptures are the prime source of all Catholic doctrine, contrary to what many may believe.

The Foundations of the Catholic Faith 2 – The Hierarchy of Truths by Fr Guy de Gaynesford

Foundations of the Catholic Faith artwork for podcastIn the Catechism we find this paragraph describing the cohesiveness, the wholeness, the unity, of the Catholic Faith: ‘The mutual connections between dogmas, and their coherence, can be found in the whole of the Revelation of the mystery of Christ’. Quoting from the document Unitatis Redintegratio of the Second Vatican Council on Ecumenism, the paragraph continues: ‘In Catholic doctrine there exists an order or “hierarchy” of truths, since they vary in their relation to the foundation of the Christian faith.’ (CCC 90)  Fr Guy discusses this further and very usefully lists the five foundational truths of the Catholic faith and gives a brief overview of each: the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Paschal Mystery, the Dignity of Man and the Church.
